J. Crooker, Nova Scotia, Canada

This was one of the conclusions when IFFA organised a workshop on exchange of experience in Oslo 2o-21 October 2015. The aim of the workshop was in three parts. One goal was to develop most efficient way of sharing experience within different levels of the organisation. The second goal was to explore policies and programs that could increase production of timber from family forestry and small holders. The third goal was to prepare for sharing experience with producer organisations on all parts of the world and between north and south. The lessons learned will be used to prepare for an IFFA Asian conference to be held in 2016.

Lessons learned were that changing experience is useful and inspiring. This will improve the work in the home organisation. There is a lot of value in making connections, building networks and social dimension of meeting people struggling with parallel challenges. The number of participating organisations should not exceed 10-15, and the conference could be follow up by e-mail exchange, written material and Skype conferences. The more participants the less complicated the issues can be.

The exchange of experience between countries and organisations of different economies could be very useful as well, especially in building organisation and cooperatives and communicating the values of locally controlled forestry and advantages of organising small holders. There is a lot of knowledge in all kinds of organisations, and a wealth of success stories in the global south as well as in the north.
