  • The theme of 2017 is forest and energy. UN points at wood as a major renewable energy source, powers economic development, contributes to livelihood, mitigate climate change, foster sustainable development and a future green economy.

IFFA note that good governance, secure land tenure rights and market access are most important to encourage family forest owners and farmers to invest in sustainable management and long term growing and harvesting trees.

The green carbon cycle in sustainable managed forests is the world’s greatest contribution to climate actions. Standing trees and long life-span wood products provide carbon sinks, growing trees sequester CO2 and wood substitute fossil fuels and fossil based materials.

Forest and small holders contribute to climate action, clean water, food security, erosion control, better livelihood, children’s education and benefit for families, communities and the society, states IFFA.
